As more English people were attracted to the village of Grovesend to work in the coal mines, so more streets of houses were built. Sion Church Waungron kindly lent their church for English meeting, and on weeknights. Prayer meetings and children’s meetings
A meeting was convened at Sion Waungron when it was decided to buy land to build a church to serve the English speaking people. The Church called Mount Pleasant was built in 1908 and the first service held on January 3rd 1909
The carved pulpit, pews and other furnishings were bought at a reasonable price and brought by horse and cart from the Countess of Huntington’s Church Castle Street, Swansea. Which was being demolished.
It was decided in July 1910 to add to the present building, by building the vestry at the rear of the church to be used for Sunday school classes and weeknight meetings.
In 1921 the need for redecoration was realised and officers and members undertook the task. The ceiling provided the greatest problem, but it was painted from seats placed upon seats and planks on top of them. All the work was completed in a week and the only cost being the paint.
Services held on November 8th and 9th 1931 to give thanks for the clearance of the Chapel debt.
A meeting was held on 2nd October 1932 to consider the installation of heating apparatus, and the contract was given to Messer’s Musgrave & Co Cardiff at their estimated cost of £48. 10. 0d the contract was completed on 8th January 1933 and the amount was paid when the bill was presented.
In 1940 an application for a marriage licence was granted, the first ceremony to be performed at the Church was in May. When Miss Mary Morris, a member of the church was joined in matrimony.
